5 Herbs to Help You Beat The Heat

It’s unusual for Vancouver to be in the middle of a dry spell. This one has lasted for 3 months.  Usually the hot temperatures come for a week or two. The past couple of years things have changed.  Herbs help you stay cool!

Refrigerant Herbs –  As the name implies, these herbs are excellent for helping you to beat the heat.  Some of these herbs include

  • Nettles
  • Cucumber
  • Borage
  • Peppermint
  • Lemon

Refrigerants are excellent herbs to treat menopausal heat.  They cool you from the inside out.

Nettles are Refrigerants

Nettles are Refrigerant Herbs

Stinging nettles are one of the most nutritious herbs.  They are filled with vitamins and minerals.  They can be steamed, used in soup or salad and made into tea.  Nettles work by keeping you cool from the inside out.

Harvesting nettles can be a challenge but can be done if you wear gloves.  My favourite way to use nettles is in tea.  All of the benefits and none of the pain!

Cucumbers For Cooling and Hydration

Cucumber is a refrigerant that cools you from the inside out.  It helps keep you hydrated and is great for hair and nails.  My last weeks post covers off why you should drink cucumber lemon water.  It can be found here

Most people have had cucumber in salads but did you know that it makes an excellent gluten free sandwich?  Hollow out a cucumber (usually a field cuke since they have more seeds and a bigger circumference).  You can slice it in half lengthways or simply core it.  Fill it with your favourite sandwich ingredients and serve it right away.  I like to slice it lengthways or in slices and make open faced sandwiches or appetizers.  This works well with egg or chicken salad, cold meat, cheeses or anything you can think of.

Borage Keeps You Cool and Happy

Borage is a refrigerant that cools you from the inside out.  It was added to beer to keep people happy.  The Roman legions used borage to maintain the morale of the soldiers away from home for years at a time.  For the full info read my blog here.

Peppermint is an herb that cools you down by increasing sweat.  It has a cool taste and is excellent in iced tea.  For the full rundown on peppermint see my blog here.

Peppermint Iced Tea

 3 peppermint tea bags

8 cups boiled water

1/4 cup sugar

Mint for garnish.

Boil the water and pour over teabags.  If possible steep the tea covered.  Covering peppermint tea while it’s steeping helps retain the volatile oils.  Place the sugar into a pitcher and pour the tea over while it is still warm.  Stir till sugar is dissolved.  (alternately you can use another sweeter or make simple syrup).  Serve over ice.

Luscious Lemons

Lemons are just simply refreshing.  They are filled with vitamin C.  Lemons are antibiotic and anti-fungal.  They have a multitude of uses.  Lemons make your water alkaline and assist with hydration.

Basic Lemonade

1-11/2 cups lemon juice

1 cup sugar

8 cups water

Combine and serve over ice.  If you like your lemonade sweeter you can adjust the amount of sugar.

Simple syrup

1 cup granulated sugar

1 cup water

Combine in saucepan.  place on stove and simmer until sugar has melted.

Remember to keep cool the best thing you can do for yourself is hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.  Also remember to come in out of the heat for regular breaks.
