Many Uses for Cinnamon

Cinnamon has benefits that range from heart health to insect repellent. It is easy to find and relatively inexpensive.

Mellow flavoured Ceylon is considered “true” cinnamon. It is the more expensive of the two types. Cassia cinnamon is the most common.  It is much less expensive, available in most grocery stores and has a stronger flavor.

Crazy Uses

Currently it has become a trend to try and swallow a full tablespoon of cinnamon in under 60 seconds. This is called the Cinnamon Challenge and can actually kill. This spice is known to dry out the mouth so that it is impossible to swallow. Trying causes you to inhale a large amount of the powder which can damage the lungs and clog the airways.
This should NEVER be attempted. There are various conflicting stories on the internet that people have either died or haven’t. The risk is just not worth it when there are so many other amazing things you can do with cinnamon.

Reduces LDL or “bad” cholesterol – According to the Mayo Clinic animal studies show a benefit in lowering cholesterol. Studies from the NIH do show the lipid reducing action of cinnamon.

Insect Repellent

Most of us don’t want to use poison to rid ourselves of infestations of ants. However, ants are the most persistent of insects. Enter cinnamon. You can place cinnamon around the area the ants are coming in. The smell overpowers them and they leave. You can place cinnamon in cupboards, make a spray and spray it around the area the ants accumulate. It takes about a week for the ants to stop coming so spray often and make sure the powder or sticks around the entrance don’t wash away.
Peppermint and Garlic are also effective against ants.
