Oregano Health Benefits

I love to cook!  Cooking and herbalism have always seemed like a perfect combination.  Nowhere in the world is this more evident than in the Mediterranean region.  Not only is the food delicious in this area, but it is one of the healthiest diets in the world.  One ingredient that is surprisingly good for you is Oregano!

Healing Actions

Oregano has many traditional uses due to its extensive list of healing actions:

  • Antioxidant
  • Antiseptic
  • Anti-fungal
  • Carminative
  • Pain Relief
  • Skin disorders
  • Anti-cancer
  • Cold and Flu see my blog here

 Heart Health

Oregano has been found to lower bad cholesterol or LDL.  Oregano has both Omega 3 oils and heart healthy amino acids.  It is the antioxidants contained in oregano that are thought to reduce LDL.  Oregano oil has been shown to help normalize blood pressure.

Antiseptic Antifungal

Oregano has been shown to defeat some of the toughest drug resistant bugs of our time.  It has been effective treating

  • MRSA
  • Candida
  • Nail Fungus
  • Drug resistant TB
  • Necrotizing Fasciitis
  • Salmonella
  • e. Coli

The chemical in oregano that is so effective against bacteria and fungal infection is Carvacrol.  Carvracol is a phytochemical which has the scent of oregano.

Carvracol is being studied for its effects at treating cancer.  It has been used against cancer cells including

  • Breast
  • Prostate
  • Lung
  • Oral
  • Brain

It is very effective at expediting cancer cell death.  No information is available about dosage amounts and much research still needs to be done before it will be used in human trials.

Cleaning Your Home

Not only is oregano good for cleaning your body, it’s also an excellent cleaner for you home.  It is the Oregano oil that has been used for home cleaning.

It has been shown to eliminate Listeria in specific concentrations.  You can add oil of oregano to distilled water to clean surfaces.  You can use a few drops in your oil diffuser to clear out germs.  You can even use it instead of toothpaste or mouthwash to prevent harmful bacteria.

Apart from the standard cautions for pregnancy and lactation the only warning was for those people taking lithium.

It is thought that the diuretic action of oregano can impact the way the body rids itself of lithium.  It is thought that oregano can  cause a build up of lithium in the body.  Consult your doctor before using.
