Cardamom, Little Pods Big Health Benefits

One of my favourite things to do is investigate an herb I use in cooking but haven’t checked out the health benefits on.  It is always interesting and impressive that a simple ingredient in a dish can be beneficial to your whole body.  Cardamom is one of those herbs.

Cardamom has a range of benefits such as:

  • Antioxidant
  • Digestive aid
  • Heart Rhythm control
  • Cholesterol control
  • Antidepressant
  • Urinary Disorders
  • Antimicrobial
  • Antispasmodic
  • Dental diseases
  • Anti Asthmatic
  • Detox
  • Circulation assistance 

There are a whole host of other health benefits to cardamom.  Unfortunately there are too many to fit comfortably into this blog. 


Cardamom was used medicinally in the southwest of India in 1,000 BCE.  The history of its use is believed to go back around 4,000 years.  It was thought to have been brought to Europe by Alexander the Great and used extensively for digestive issues.  The Vikings are credited with bringing it back to Scandinavia.

There is some disagreement as to whether cardamom belongs to the Goddess Venus or the God Mars because of its aphrodisiac qualities.  It is found in love/lust charms which are in the realm of Venus but it can be used for magical protection which is under the influence of Mars.   


Studies are under way on the effects of cardamom on various types of cancers.  A study done by Sengupta et al. showed that cardamom has a positive effect of 48% in counteracting colorectal cancer.  It is also being investigated for hormone responding cancers like breast, ovarian and prostate cancers.

Dental Health

Cardamom is chewed throughout Asia to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.  It is also a most effective breath freshener.  It can also be used to soothe sore throats.  The beneficial effects of cardamom for oral diseases come from the antimicrobial properties.

Cardiovascular and Circulatory Health

Cardamom has been found to help control heart rhythm.  It counteracts the increased lipids in the body.  The micronutrients in cardamom are what give it the beneficial cardiovascular effects.

Cardamom and Mood

Cardamom has mild antidepressant properties.  It calms the nerves.  It can be used in aromatherapy or a tea.  Just steep some pods in a cup of water and drink.


At least one study has shown cardamom to be useful in opening constricted bronchial tubes.  It promotes blood flow to the lungs and relaxes tracheal tissue.


Overuse of any herb is a bad thing.  There are no interactions listed for cardamom at present.  There is a caution about using cardamom when pregnant.  If you have gallstones WebMD recommends only taking cardamom in food quantities because it can cause spasms.

Cardamom is an amazing healer as well as being a delicious addition to any dish from curries to cookies.  This is one of the most versatile herbs.
